Word profile on George Dickie

George Dickie is the president of Shoalhaven Ex-Serviceman's Cricket Club. He has been a part of the club for 23 years and really loves the club. The club is mainly run by volunteers, the parents of the players are some of the volunteers helping the club out. George doesn't gain a lot off the club he is mostly just proud to be the president and represent such an outstanding club of cricketers. George is very proud of the club and the way they have become such a great cricket club over the past the club has managed to be regarded to have one of the best cricket grounds on the south coast. George thinks the future of the club is going to sound and stay the same as they get money from the Ex-Servicemen’s club to support their players, maintain the ground, and keep everything in great condition. The club needs to focus more on their marketing in the future and keep the players stabilised and get offered the full potential as this cricket club has been offering their players over the last 50 years. Without the committee the club wouldn’t have what they have achieved now. The club has had very successful years over the past and now in the present. Last year was one of the best years for the club winning 7 premierships and getting the club championship. They players love winning the games and most of all love the skills they improve on every time they get onto the field. The club will strive to continue to have a good record and give the player what they need. The club will offer a very rewarding cricket experience for their members in the years to come.

Interview with George Dickie; Club President

What do you gain as being president? & how do you benefit from the club?
There are no direct gains or benefits associated to the role of President. Our organisation is commonly known as a 'grass roots' sporting organisation purely run by volunteers. All the work that is done is for the benefit of the members no-one is paid. The only real benefit that the volunteers enjoy is the satisfaction that the players and supporters have enjoyed their season
of cricket and hopefully return again the following year.

What do you think is good about ex servos?
My personal involvement with the Club extends (23) years and there are many great memories over this period. Ex-Servicemen's Cricket Club is the only local Club who has a private ground and training facility and is we'll regarded as one of the best grounds on the South Coast.

What do you see as the future of the club?
The future of Club is sound and will always have strong financial support from the Exservicemens Club. There will be challenges ahead as cricket in general is seeing a major decline in junior numbers as parents and kids seek alternate sports which consume less time.

Ex-servicemen’s will need to focus on marketing, player retention and continue to offer a great cricket experience to all their members similar to what has been offered the last (50) years.

What is your role as being president include. what do you look after?
The role of president primarily oversees the operation of the cricket Club who is well supported by an executive committee. They form a team a decision makers who need to have a good understanding of the needs of the members.

The committee need to follow a set of rules known as the constitution. This is a document that guides the committee on how the club should be run. The constitution also has a set of by-laws which is a set of internal policies, it helps members understand how decisions are made. The policies are reviewed each year and developed to suit the changing needs of the Club.

The on-field performances are one of many measures of success for the club. Players enjoy winning games of cricket but the overall enjoyment and skill improvement of the players combined with good quality social events supersede the need to win cricket games every week.

Compared to all the other teams in the shoalhaven in each grade, about what percentage plays for ex servos?

Exservicemens have been around for over (50) years. Last season was the best on record with (7) premierships and the club championship. They boast a range of qualified coaches who deliver very good training and skill development programs to the players. The club caters for players from (5) years to adult and has cricket available for all skill levels.

The club will continue to play good consistent cricket and offer a very rewarding cricket experience for their members in the years to come.

Past of Ex-Servicemen's Cricket Club

The Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen’s cricket club was created by Ted Regan who previously played for Nowra, along with the Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen’s club and a few locals who were keen to play some cricket. Nowra were the dominant team having three back to back premierships and with having two teams in each grade Ted Regan decided to create a new cricket club. In 1960 they had made their own club. They were lucky enough to have had the Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen’s club sponsor them to form the Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen’s Cricket Club.

There are no important developments within the club at this present time but they are striving to be a better cricket club. The biggest development they have made is establishing their cricket club which is now beneficial to all the players and the community. The club has gotten better over the past years and is now a raging cricket club with some really amazing cricket players going through the club.

There are a lot of important people within the club. One of the most important people in the club was the creator Ted Regan who was a really great cricket player and gave everyone such a lucky opportunity by making the ex-servicemen’s cricket club. There are life members who have helped make the cricket club what it is today. Everyone who is a part of the club now is very grateful for everybody’s contribution to the club over the years and made the club such a loving caring place to play cricket. Over the years there have been many friendships formed and the support of the local community have been so appreciated by the players as without the fundraising by the community and the money by Ex-Serviceman’s club there may not be a club that many love today.
Past and present players really do benefit from this club. The players and the community both have really made the cricket club a really nice and happy place to be. The players are encouraging and supportive of each other which all push each other to be better cricket players. In the past they have all been the same and all made each other strive for better things with in the club. The things that everyone has done in the past we as players are so grateful for. We are also lucky to have such a great club.
